A NEW immersive exhibition will explore the smells of one of Scotland’s most famous streets through history.
Not To Be Sniffed At: An Aromatic History of Sauchiehall Street opens at Edward House on this Saturday and runs to May 1.
The exhibition, a collaboration between Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and perfumier Clara Weale, promises to visitors the chance to “unlock memories” through smell.
Sauchiehall Street is Glasgow’s best-known street and home to a number of nightlife venues, restaurants and bars.
Its recent redevelopment has proved controversial and many units lie vacant in the aftermath of Covid and as shoppers retreat from the high street in favour of online shopping.
Glasgow Life, the council’s cultural arm, is currently trying to restore the thoroughfare as a centre for culture in the city.
As well as the exhibition, other events include the launch entitled ‘Smelly Sauchiehall Street: An Aromatic History of Sauchiehall Street’ which takes place on Saturday, April 19 at midday.
Sauchiehall Street to Seven Lochs tells the public about the links between the busy street and Scotland’s largest urban heritage and nature park.
Smelly Sunday takes place on Sunday, April 27 between midday and 3pm. It promises to give children and adults a chance to explore the exhibition and enjoy an afternoon of “smelly activities”.
In a nod to the street’s reputation for clubs and bars, there will a “night out” event on Thursday, May 1.
Weale, who specialises in scents and perfumes for artists, will also host a unique “smell of the Savoy Centre” on Saturday, May 3.
