'Smashing player' - Manager dismisses talk of transfer involving Nottingham Forest outcast

Bolton Wanderers boss Keith Hill has dismissed speculation suggesting the club made a move to sign Zach Clough from Nottingham Forest.

The Reds midfielder was linked with a move back to the University of Bolton Stadium during the latter stages of the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old started his career with Bolton, bagging 22 goals in 68 appearances before moving to the City Ground in January 2017.

Clough then returned to the Trotters on loan for the second half of the 2017/18 season, where he scored just one goal in nine appearances, which included just two starts.

Since then, Clough has had a loan stint with Rochdale, and has failed to earn a place in the Forest first team.

Despite the speculation linking Clough with a return to Bolton, Hill insists that a move for the Reds midfielder was never on the cards during last month’s transfer window.

“I don’t know where it came from – unless someone at this football club is making calls on my behalf, which I don’t think they are,” Hill told The Bolton News.

He added: “I know Zach really well and he’s a talented football player who has got to find his football feet again.

“And when he does that he’s going to be a smashing player for whoever he signs for, or Nottingham Forest.”
