#SmashaStrawb: Social media lights up with these inventive strawberry recipes

People have taken to social media to share their inventive strawberry recipes and urge others to support farmers, giving rise to the trending tag #SmashaStrawb.

Everything from cakes to cocktails are on the menu after the needle scare sent shockwaves through the industry.

Farmers have been forced to dump tonnes of fresh produce, while others are seeking to diversify in the hope of staying afloat.

But as many inventive people have pointed out, there are plenty of careful yet delicious ways to enjoy a punnet of strawberries.

Social media has also lit up with people rallying behind farmers, with a sketch telling people: "Cut 'em up, don't cut 'em out" going viral.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has ordered a federal investigation into the needle scare across Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

Both the Queensland and West Australian governments have offered $100,000 rewards for information that leads to the prosecution of anyone responsible for inserting sewing needles into the fruit.
