Smash Mouth gig linked to rise of coronavirus cases as band yelled 'f**k Covid' to crowd

A Smash Mouth concert that took place earlier this month is now being linked to a sharp rise in coronavirus cases in the US.

Fingers are being pointed at the band after frontman Steve Harwell, 53, chanted "f**k Covid" during the mask-free gig.

Since the concert, more than 100 have been diagnosed with the deadly bug as goers headed to a packed gig on August 9th in South Dakota.

Lead singer Steve was heard yelling: "F**k that Covid s**t. Now we're all here together tonight."

Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the North Dakota Department of Health confirmed that 17 cases directly related to the rally had been identified in the state.

The remaining 103 connected cases had also been found in the surrounding states.

In addition to these cases, officials said that 40 coronavirus cases connected to the annual rally had been diagnosed, including three out of state.

Mirror Online has contacted Smash Mouth's reps for comment.

It comes as the band's manager praised organisers for the "fantastic job" they did in making the concert safe.

Robert Hayes said the band members were confident of their own safety and that of their crew.

Speaking to Billboard, he insisted: "The promoter did a fantastic job with their COVID protocol.

"They had a very strict social distancing and mask policy in place for all workers. Everything backstage was sanitized, etc.

"The band has their own COVID addendum to their rider as well and the promoter and venue adhered to all of our requests."

He went on: "We spent endless hours advancing this event to make sure that it was pulled off as safely as possible and we are very happy with the outcome.

"That said most all of them were on their motorcycles which eliminated a lot of physical contact between attendees and actually created a forced social distance.

"The Smash Mouth organization is taking this pandemic very seriously and has taken measures to keep our band, crew and fans as safe as possible during this time."

Naturally, the gig sparked major backlash from outraged fans.

In fact, the band itself took to Instagram to share some of the hate mail they received.

A smashed up CD from a former fan was among the items, who dubbed the band "selfish f**kers".

Sharing the image with their 17k followers, the band penned: "Recent fan mail."
