After being made redundant from teaching 18 months ago, I decided to make affordable, handmade garden stakes using my skills as a trained sculptor. I focused on a way to wholesale quality items. These are British-made products, nothing is imported, which is very important to my client base. I managed to grow the business quickly and now have a number of large clients such as the National Trust and Kew Gardens.
Being a graduate of the Royal Academy gave me great technical skills, but little knowledge on how to run a growing business. After a busy first year I have found a way of streamlining the way orders are logged, processed and invoiced by using an excel spreadsheet. Being severely dyslexic, I am naturally disorganised, therefore any help with organisation is well received!
This spreadsheet generates a job sheet, delivery note and invoice from one input. I have also been lucky enough to be mentored by a successful businesswoman who has guided me through some of the the pitfalls encountered in the business world. Since working with this streamlined system I have been able to take on more clients and have even started an online shop.
