One cold morning in January, I jumped out of bed and I said to myself: ‘I need to do things differently in order for my business to be more successful. I need to get organised.’
Easier said than done. I had no marketing plan, bits of paper all over my desk and I tended to work reactively rather than proactively.
I’m a self employed graphic designer and for the last few years I’ve relied on forging partnerships with PR and Marketing agencies to feed me projects. This was alright, but I realised I couldn’t become successful this way.
Admittedly, I had no idea what to do next. How could I get clients on my own? How would I find the time? What was my plan?
Having trawled the internet, I happened to stumble upon a free webinar by Ilise Benun, a marketing mentor based in the US. This turned my life around.
I now have a day-by-day plan. Monday is researching prospects, Tuesday is for marketing, and so on. It’s helped me to be proactive – to promote myself, find work and clients on my own terms.
I’m also going to regular networking events so hopefully this will pay off too. I’m slowly seeing the benefits of this routine and I’m sure in the long run it will pay off.
