As a small but fast-growing business, we have made a big push in documenting our processes in order to get things done more efficiently.
When a new team member comes on board, we now have a whole library of documents describing the standard ways ‘Team Hallam’ does things. Because we’re a digital marketing agency we have processes for technical tasks, such as analysing how well a website is ranking in Google or conducting a competitor analysis report or doing keyword research. But we also have documented processes for our softer skills like welcoming a new client, or preparing for a client meeting.
On the one hand, writing up these processes is one of the jobs we all hate to do. And it may give us the impression that we are losing our individual, creative ways of doing things. But the idea isn’t to turn us into factory workers doing identical tasks. Instead, our documented processes give each of us a helping hand when learning how to do something for the first time, and the efficiency benefits are enormous. And of course the process of writing up our processes has proven invaluable as it gives us a chance to reflect and reconsider how we have always done things.
Taking the time to document processes gives us an opportunity to continue to improve and innovate, and find ways to become even more efficient.
