We are a digital product company in Newcastle Upon Tyne and, after turning four last year, we made plans to move office. This was due to the increase in the size of our team, but also for a more workable, functioning and jolly environment.
In our old office we all faced away from each other, barely anybody spoke face-to-face, and we always opted for our communal chat room to communicate.
As we work on collaborative projects, and are a small company, this proved to be unproductive for our work. Since moving offices (to one with multiple rooms) we’ve remained in the same room.
This is until our team grows, but it’s great because all of our desks now face each other. Within the first week, this made a huge impact on morale, work ethic, and, most obviously, communication.
Members of the team who’d never spoken much before, now talk all of the time. There’s a heightened level of speech in the room, where as before it was mainly silent. The team is more confident and involved in working together. This is leading to an increase in productivity, and rapid progress on our projects.
Although personality has always been important to us - and our team has lots of it - there’s now so much more laughter in the studio, and the environment is hard-working, yet free.
