The internet is the revolution that has enabled smarter working across a number of industries. For a person with my background the world of fiction publishing would have been a closed shop until a decade ago. Now I am in the privileged position of running a crime and horror fiction publishing company printing and distributing books to the UK and beyond from a small home office.

I have a great team of freelance operatives who are all highly skilled in their own areas of expertise. Since 2010 we have published 50 paperback and e-book titles, numerous audiobooks, and have been shortlisted against a major publisher for our app and digital strategy in the Bookseller Awards in 2014.

I have developed relationships to take my business from a home office self-funded sole trading startup to a limited publishing company working with UK and US distributors. I have liaised with retail buyers and taken advantage of new and growing online opportunities such as Amazon and Kobo.

With no funding coming from any other source it is imperative to work smart – in the past financial year we posted a small operating profit after tax of just under £7,000 from a turnover of just over £78,000.

Darren Laws is the managing director of Caffeine Nights Publishing
