I run a digital marketing consultancy called Beyond Social Buzz and would like to share a simple tip on increasing efficiency in today’s digital reality. My small business was set up last year and I wanted to come across as efficient as possible in the eyes of my clients. This proved particularly challenging in the area of real-time management of social media conversations.
It seems that with the long list of automation tools available out there, including Google and hashtag alerts, email notifications and other social mention tools, this area of service should be easily covered. However, I found myself sacrificing my efficiency at work, family time and hobbies in the interest of providing instant responses to all incoming social conversations.
As good as the automation tools are, they cannot at the moment provide us with the hierarchy of importance and ability to filter through the social noise, selecting which alerts should be addressed asap, and which can be handled at a more convenient time.
This is when I decided to take a more considered approach and put some clear boundaries in place, to prevent my work becoming a never-ending, 24/7 chore.
Managing real-time social media is very important for my business, but it doesn’t always have to happen in real-time. I still monitor social notifications, but now judge them on the basis of urgency, so the social media management is happening in the right time and not necessarily in real-time.
