'Smart' Netflix trick woman used to keep watching her ex's account - and how you can keep yours safe

Some relationships are hard to say goodbye to... and it's especially sore when you have to let go of much-loved telly streaming options.

Gone are the days of just returning your ex's things and hoping not to run into them down the pub. Now we can have online statuses to deal with, deleting albums of images of happy memories and the pain of potentially losing access to some great TV boxsets.

However, someone has revealed of a "smart" trick an ex of his brother did, which allowed her to still use his Netflix account months after they split, reports The Mirror.

(Daily Record)

He tweeted: “My brother's ex had been stealing our Netflix for the past two months by disguising her account as 'settings' and honestly I ain’t even mad.

“I’m just really disappointed in myself for actually believing that an account named 'settings' would legitimately be Netflix settings.”

Several users have now applauded the woman’s ingenuity. One said: “Remember in school when the teachers used to say, not everyone can be academic, some have to find their own version of being smart....THIS is one of those versions!”

Another added: “Let her keep it. She deserves it.”

Netflix even replied to the tweet, simply writing: “Respect.”

Thankfully, it’s very simple to check who has used your Netflix account, and to block them from using it.

And Netflix lets you lock specific profiles with a PIN.

The firm explained: “If you want to restrict access to a specific profile on your account, you can protect it with a Profile Lock PIN.”

How to add a PIN to a profile

  1. Open Netflix on a web browser and go to your Account page
  2. Open the Profile & Parental Controls settings for the profile you want to lock
  3. Change the Profile Lock setting
  4. Enter your Netflix account password
  5. Check the box to Require a PIN to access the selected profile
  6. To remove the PIN requirement, uncheck the box
  7. Enter four numbers to create your Profile Lock PIN
  8. Select Submit.

How you can stop someone using your account

If someone is using your account without permission, do the following to prevent further use:

  1. Log into your Netflix account
  2. Hover over your account name in the top right-hand corner of the screen and click "manage profiles" from the drop-down menu
  3. On your account page, click "Sign out of all devices"
  4. Netflix will prompt you to sign your Netflix account out of all devices currently using it. Click the blue Sign Out button
  5. A green banner will inform you you've been signed out of all devices. It can take up to eight hours to take effect
  6. It’s also a good idea to change your password to make sure no exes can sign back into your account.
