Croydon has teamed up with VALO Smart City to turn bus shelters into street information hubs
(Picture: Handout)Almost 200 “smart” bus shelters that tell waiting passengers about local air quality and traffic conditions are being installed around Croydon next year.
The borough is the first in Britain to team up with a tech firm to turn bus shelters into street information hubs.
It has agreed a 10 year partnership worth £6.75 million to the south London local authority with US company VALO Smart City.
The shelters will also provide free WiFi for the public and new bus countdown screens.
There will be 185 installed in total across Croydon starting from next March.
Muhammad Ali, cabinet member for sustainable Croydon, said: “I am very excited about the arrival of these smart bus shelters which will make residents’ travel experiences more enjoyable, informative and safer. The smart city sensors will also act as a great tool in our continued mission to become a greener, more sustainable Borough.
“Our partnership with is our latest step towards Croydon becoming not only a digital council but the first truly connected smart borough which uses technology to enhance and transform the lives of our residents for the better.”
