Smaller rise in number of covid-19 cases across Nottinghamshire as deaths surge

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus across Nottinghamshire has seen a smaller increase than in previous days, the latest figures show.

As of Tuesday, March 31, Public Health England data shows there are now 100 confirmed cases of the covid-19 virus in Nottingham, up by just one from yesterday.

In Nottinghamshire, there are now 218 cases, up by two from 216 yesterday.

While there have only been three confirmed cases, the number could be higher in those who are not being tested.

This was a smaller increase than previously seen over the last week, but the number of deaths in Nottingham hospitals surged by eight people in the space of two days since March 29, bringing the total to 18.

In the latest Government daily briefing on March 31, senior minister Michael Gove, national medical director for NHS England Stephen Powis and deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries, said while the number of infections had seemed to have "plateaued" across the UK, the number of deaths is expected to rise.

National medical director for NHS England Stephen Powis said: "We are not out of the woods, we are very much in the woods."

In the briefing they said Britain had not yet experienced the peak of the infection, and warned people to remain vigilant and not take their foot off the pedal in regards to social distancing.

In the rest of the UK, the number of deaths surged by 381 from 1,408, taking the total to 1,789, the largest daily rise since records began.

There are now 25,150 cases in the UK after an increase of 3,009 in the last 24 hours.
