Small Island at the National Theatre: First look at production pictures of Andrea Levy adaptation

The first production pictures of Andrea Levy’s Small Island at the National Theatre have been released.

Helen Edmundson has adapted the Orange Prize-winning novel for the Olivier stage, opening on May 1.

National Theatre artistic director Rufus Norris directs the show, with Leah Harvey, Aisling Loftus and Gershwyn Eustache leading a cast of 40.

Small Island tells a story of a journey from Jamaica to England, from the Second World War to 1948, when the HMT Empire Windrush docked on British shores.

Katrina Lindsay provides set and costume design, with lighting by Paul Anderson, composition by Benjamin Kwasi Burrell, sound by Ian Dickinson and movement by Coral Messam.

The cast also features CJ Beckford, Paul Bentall, Jacqueline Boatswain, Phoebe Frances Brown, Chereen Buckley, Keira Chansa, Cavan Clarke, Shiloh Coke, Shaquahn Crowe, Beatie Edney, Adam Ewan, David Fielder, Amy Forrest, Aiko Foueillis-Mose, Nova Foueillis-Mose, John Hastings, Raphael Higgins-Humes, Stephanie Jacob, Sandra James-Young, CJ Johnson, Natey Jones, Trevor Laird, Rebecca Lee, Quincy Miller-Cole, Johann Myers, Daniel Norford and Andrew Rothney.

The play will be broadcast with NT Live on June 27.
