Small gestures to ease immigrants’ post-Brexit anxieties

On Tuesday I started my campaign of handing out cards I’ve made to members of our immigrant community here in Chelmsford. I wrote in each card “You are welcome here” (borrowed from the current NHS message to their many anxious immigrant staff). Anybody can do this. Any token of your support would do – a flower, a cake, anything. One young man said I’d touched his heart and another encouraged me to start a Facebook page and go on Twitter. In my bruised post-Brexit state I wanted to keep my campaign very low-tech, but it would be great if others could go online with it.

I do wish that David Cameron and Boris Johnson had just challenged each other to a duel instead of sucking us all into this poisonous mess.

• Last week I lived in a country where the vast majority embraced and celebrated different nationalities and cultures. I voted to remain in the EU so that this would continue. I now find myself in a country where racist abuse is widespread. Whatever happens in our relations with the rest of Europe, I would like my old country back please.
