Small Business Professor: Transferring skill sets

Q: I have run my own business for 25 years. Despite having to deal with the challenges of having multiple sclerosis, I've been able to succeed. At this point, though, I'd like to try something new _ either really expanding my business or reinventing myself. Any advice?

A: Many of us have been doing the same thing for years and wonder what else is out there.

In my case, I was able to establish my high-tech public relations business after losing my job with a major publishing company. I was able to parlay my writing, communications and interpersonal skills into a successful enterprise.

During my many years in this business, I published a book and became a syndicated columnist, picking up new skills with each new experience. In addition, I have been an adjunct professor at two universities, teaching management, marketing and entrepreneurship.

I also have MS and have been able to turn the challenges it presents into opportunities.

I am currently developing a motivational speaking business and have already had four speaking engagements. In the presentation, I leverage the tools I've developed through my life and business experiences to teach the audience about overcoming adversity.

By doing this, I'm taking what I already know and adapting it to my situation to explore new territory.

You can do the same.

Once you've set your goals, it's important to let others know you're expanding. Email everyone you know _ friends, clients and business associates _ and get the word out via social media. Also try parlaying those skills, as I did, to reach out into the community.
