Small Bar on King Street reopens for takeaway beers

With a decent weather forecast, lots of people will be looking to enjoy a few pints in the sun over the coming days.

While we'll have to wait until July 4 before being able to sit down in our favourite boozer, there are some bars in Bristol currently serving top-notch beers for people to take away.

The soon-to-be pedestrianised King Street is known for being one of the city's finest drinking destinations, lined with top pubs and restaurants that serve food perfect for devouring after a few pints.

It has been a far quieter place than usual over the past three months for obvious reasons, however it is slowly but surely returning to something close to its former self.

Just days after legendary cider boat The Apple reopened for a takeaway service at the end of May, the equally-revered Small Bar followed suit.

Since the start of June the highly-rated bar has been allowing people to pick up exceptional sours, IPAs and more produced by the likes of Left Handed Giant, Verdant and Cloudwater.

Better still, as pop-up restaurant Wing's Diner - which operates in the kitchen at Small Bar - has also reopened for takeaway, people can pick up some chicken wings along with their booze, which is served in cans and recyclable bottles.

Bruce Gray, owner of Small Bar, said: "The response has been really positive since we reopened.

"We only really did it so we could get used to serving under new social distancing measures and didn't expect to be busy, but it's been pretty crazy.

"I think the safety measures we have in place definitely make people feel less terrified and more comfortable about heading out for a drink."

All staff handling orders at Small Bar wear protective gloves while markings on the ground encourage people to keep two metres apart from others in the queue outside the building.

The bar also asks that people queue individually rather than in groups, and to use contactless payments.

Bruce plans to reopen Small Bar for sit-down customers on July 4, using the pedestrianisation of King Street to allow more people to enjoy their drinks on seating outside.
