Sluggish Cubs drop second straight to Diamondbacks, 5-1

CHICAGO _ Another listless offensive performance _ this time without slugger Kris Bryant _ resulted Tuesday night in a second consecutive loss for the Cubs.

Jason Heyward's home run in the sixth inning was the only spark in a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.

The Cubs have scored two runs in their past two games. Tuesday's setback occurred without Bryant, who is sidelined due to recurring discomfort in his left shoulder.

In addition, second baseman Javier Baez was pulled in the top of the eighth inning as part of a double switch. Baez was limping slightly after Steven Souza Jr. slid hard into his knee while unsuccessfully trying to stretch a single into a double to lead off the seventh. Baez managed to finish the inning.

The Cubs had six hits in 6 2/3 innings against Clay Buchholz, who used an effective changeup. Baez legged out an infield single for the Cubs' first hit of the game in the fourth and advanced to third on a double by Ian Happ _ Bryant's replacement at third base.

But Kyle Schwarber grounded to second to end the rally.

Starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks became only the second Cubs starting pitcher to bat eighth this season. On the mound, Hendricks was tagged for three runs in the fifth on run-scoring hits by Paul Goldschmidt, Souza and Jake Lamb.

Victor Caratini, who batted in the ninth spot, reached base twice with two out ahead of leadoff batter Anthony Rizzo. But Rizzo popped to short to end the fifth.

In the seventh, Rizzo drew a walk to load the bases, but reliever Archie Bradley struck out Albert Almora Jr.

Rizzo and Souza exchanged words in the ninth after Souza was hit by a pitch by Steve Cishek, but order was restored. The Diamondbacks added another run on an infield hit by Ketel Marte.
