Slug turns bright blue after absorbing alcohol left in discarded MD 20/20 bottle

A slug has survived being found inside a discarded bottle of MD 20/20 by litter pickers - having turned bright blue after absorbing the leftover 'dregs' of the bottle.

Members of The North Calder Heritage Restoration project discovered the poor slug while on an organised litter pickup in Airdrie earlier this week, the Daily Record reports.

Its bizarre colour suggests that it crawled inside the Blue Raspberry edition of the 75cl bottle of fortified wine - which is popular among teenagers and young adults in Scotland - and absorbed whatever alcohol remained in it when it was thrown away.

The North Calder Heritage Restoration posted a photo on Facebook of the bright blue slug next to the empty bottle, along with a photo of all the rubbish they collected on what was their sixth organised litter pickup in the area.

The post was captioned: "Poured this wee guy out of the bottle and couldn't believe my eyes. Found on the North Calder Heritage Trail in Airdrie on our 6th litter-picking event(alive somehow)! All of Scotland's crisis emergencies in one picture."

They also added various hashtags to the post to tie in with the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow and the need for climate action, as well as that of '#litterpicking' and '#biodiversity'.
