Slowthai review: An incendiary talent comes out fighting

Considering the combative power of his rhymes, Tyron Frampton’s decision to book a boxing hall for the final date of his Brexit Bandit tour seemed an inspired choice.

Introduced by the ring announcer as “The King of England; the grand master of disaster”, the Northampton MC bounded into the central boxing ring to the strains of God Save The Queen, and spent the next hour doing his damnedest to live up to the enjoyably tongue-in-cheek billing. Most of the time he succeeded. Trading bars with a balaclava-ed hype man, the 24-year-old was a magnetic presence, dividing his time between darting around the ring and looming over the front few rows.

Whether crowdsurfing, conducting venue-wide circle pits or pointing out his proud family dancing on the balcony, Ty consistently drew the audience into the action.

This heart-on-sleeve approach meant it was patently obvious when Ty became rattled mid-set, frustrated by security issues and sound quality. But having led the hall in the chant “F*** Theresa”, Ty came out swinging with a brilliantly visceral one-two of the nightmarish North Nights and barbed breakout track T N Biscuits, before the set climaxed with the punk snarl of Doorman, taken from Ty’s forthcoming debut, Nothing Great About Britain.

Logistical difficulties might have meant that this show perhaps wasn’t the unblemished triumph Ty had hoped for, but even a momentary mood dip couldn’t derail what was, ultimately, an impressive showcase of an incendiary talent.
