BOSTON _ The Sharks knew the Boston Bruins would be an energized group Thursday in their first game after a coaching change.
The Sharks offered little resistance.
The Sharks fell behind just 52 seconds to the first period and gave up a pair of power play goals to David Pastrnak as the Bruins rolled to a 6-3 win at TD Garden.
Goalie Martin Jones was pulled after the first period as the Bruins scored three times on their first seven shots and handed the Sharks their third straight loss.
Joe Thornton, Justin Braun and Timo Meier all scored as the Sharks fell to 0-1-1 on their four-game road trip, which continues Saturday against Philadelphia and concludes Sunday in New Jersey.
With his team down 3-1 after 20 minutes, Sharks coach Pete DeBoer hoped he could wake his team from its slumber as Jones was pulled in favor of Aaron Dell to start the second period.
The only other time Dell had come on in relief of Jones came was Nov. 5 against Pittsburgh, when DeBoer made the switch in what became a 5-0 loss to the Penguins at SAP Center.
The Sharks got one goal back at the 1:08 mark of the second period. Braun collected the puck near the blue line and fired it toward the net, where it bounced off a Bruins player and past goalie Tuukka Rask for his third goal of the season.
The Bruins responded with two goals in the final seven minutes of the second. Tim Schaller with 6:56 to go and David Pasternak scored his second power play of the game with just 49 seconds left in the second for a 5-2 Bruins lead.
Bruce Cassidy took over as the Bruins coach after Claude Julien was let go on Tuesday. Cassidy was the head coach of the Providence Bruins for five seasons.
"There's always some changes with a new coach, so try and look back at things he did in his last head coaching job in the American League and some of their tendencies," DeBoer said Thursday morning of Cassidy.
"Other than that, what we're expecting is a big push. There's always a big jump in energy when a new guy goes in and that's probably the biggest things we're preparing for."
The Sharks fell behind by two after the first period as Jones, without a lot of help around him, allowed three goals on seven shots.
David Backes gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead just 52 seconds into the first period, as a takeaway by David Krejci went to Torey Krug. He passed out front to Backes, who one-timed a shot past Jones for a 1-0 lead on Boston's first shot.
Thornton tied the game at the 7:51 mark, beating Rask with a wrist shot to the glove side for his first goal on a manned net this season. His three other goals had been empty-netters.
The Bruins scored twice in the final 4:08 of the first for a 3-1 lead as Patrice Bergeron scored his 14th of the season and Pastrnak one-timed a pass from Bergeron for the first of his two power play goals.
