Slow news day: Blanchett as Bob

Leaked footage is now on youtube of Cate Blanchett playing Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes' forthcoming flick 'I'm Not There', which takes its title from the greatest track from the mostly-unheard Basement Tapes.

As Paul Morley wrote in yesterday's OMM, things are strange and getting stranger in pop right now - particularly vis a vis the rise of the tribute band. The movie - in which a cast of seven, including Blanchett, play Bob - ups the ante in this respect. It's due in cinemas in America in late September - around the same time that Martin Scorsese's more traditional Rolling Stones film (revolving around a recent gig) appears. Both promise to be fascinating in very different ways. I've never been very fond of the traditional rockumentary - I'm not sure I have the attention span - but as a Dylan fan, I did find Scorsese's 'No Direction Home' a pretty obvious thing of wonder. If Haynes can make his film work - and Blanchett here, I have to say, convinces - it might be the movie I've always wanted to see. 'See ya later Allen Ginsberg!' this clip ends. 'In a while, crocodile,' someone added on the track with that title for the Basement Tapes, a couple of years after this fictitious meeting. Nice.
