Slovenia
Samir Handanovic 7/10
Showed quality with a wonderful left-handed save from Rooney in the 22nd minute. Could not get a strong hand on Wilshere’s first goal.
Miso Brecko 7/10
An uncompromising customer who niggled away at Sterling throughout. One dangerous second-half cross just beyond Novakovic.
Branko Ilic 6/10
Headed a presentable first-half chance to Hart. Not afraid to come out with the ball, but found England’s attack difficult to handle.
Bostjan Cesar 5/10
Should have been sent off for an elbow on Rooney 14 minutes from time. Fine in the air but struggled with England’s movement.
Bojan Jokic 7/10
Showed an early appetite to attack from left-back and his cross for Pecnik’s goal was exceptional. Rarely troubled by Townsend.
Jasmin Kurtic 6/10
Backheel for Kampl before half-time epitomised his team’s growing confidence at the time. Rarely allowed to settle and became ragged later.
Ales Mertelj 6/10
Like Kurtic, he was denied time on the ball and found it harder to hold his position in midfield as he tired. A few neat passes.
Kevin Kampl 5/10
Industrious and demonstrative but showed little quality on the ball, although he did tee up Jokic for the delivery that set up Pecnik.
Josip Ilicic 6/10
The Fiorentina playmaker started sloppily but his assist for Novakovic was perceptive. Replaced by Birsa after a fitful hour’s action.
Andraz Kirm 5/10
Must have fancied having a go at Jones, then Henderson, but looked lightweight and made little impact when given the chance to run.
Milivoje Novakovic 7/10
The veteran cannot have believed his luck when given the freedom of England’s half but finished coolly. Held the ball up intelligently.
Substitutes
Birsa (for Ilicic, 61); Pecnik (for Kirm, 72); Lazarevic (for Kurtic, 79)
England
Joe Hart 6/10
Little to do before the first goal. Would it be harsh to ask if he could have been out more sharply to delay Novakovic, who is not the most nimble?
Phil Jones 5/10
Keen to support the attack but the throw-in that allowed Slovenia to break for the goal was schoolboy stuff. Went off at the break.
Gary Cahill 6/10
Strongly implicated in the decision to push up that led to Novakovic’s goal. Rarely troubled otherwise; stuck to the striker like glue.
Chris Smalling 6/10
Has to share the blame for Slovenia’s first goal but was otherwise assured and happy to step out with the ball to support the midfield.
Kieran Gibbs 6/10
Sharp, confident performance in attack but the left-back was exposed when Pecnik outjumped him to score the equaliser.
Jack Wilshere 9/10
If his first goal was a fine strike, the second was out of this world and this felt like a huge game in the midfielder’s international career.
Fabian Delph 7/10
Settling in nicely at this level and played his part in a snappy, incisive midfield. Set up a first-half chance for Rooney and passed accurately.
Jordan Henderson 7/10
Set the tone in first half as England passed sharply and won the ball back swiftly. Moved to right-back after injury to Jones.
Andros Townsend 5/10
Generally quiet bar a first-half shot gathered by Handanovic and a cutback on the hour that Rooney should have buried.
Raheem Sterling 7/10
Heavily involved early on, lifting a good chance over the bar and seeing a shot deflect just wide. Full of enterprise drifting in from the left.
Wayne Rooney 8/10
Skied two second-half sitters but it mattered little when he slotted in to near England’s scoring record. Fine all-round performance.
Substitutes
Lallana (for Jones, 45); Walcott (for Townsend, 74); Clyne (for Delph, 85)
