Slovakia trying to lure Martin Skrtel out of retirement for Ireland playoff

Slovakia are trying to lure ex-Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel out of international retirement for the Euro 2020 playoff with Ireland.

The 35-year-old quit the national team almost two years ago and has focused on his club career with Turkish side İstanbul Başakşehir

But with injury concerns to contend with, Slovakia boss Pavel Hapal has already opened up lines of communication with the defender who has 104 caps.

Hapal said yesterday: "I have spoken to Martin. It was a pleasant and positive conversation.

“He currently has some injury problems so we will monitor him, but the possibility of his return is not yet closed.

“We agreed that we will speak to each other again before the squad is named on Tuesday.”

Skrtel left Liverpool in 2016 and played for Fenerbahce and Atalanta before joining İstanbul Başakşehir last year.

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny is due to name his squad for the October 8 clash in Bratislava next Wednesday.
