Slovakia confirm first case of coronavirus ahead of play-off against Republic of Ireland

Slovakia have confirmed their first case of coronavirus ahead of the country's Euro 2020 play-off with the Republic of Ireland.

Slovakian Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini made the announcement on Friday.

Pellegrini said the 52-year-old patient was at a hospital in Bratislava with mild symptoms.

The man had not travelled abroad recently but his son, who had shown no symptoms, had been in Venice, Pellegrini said.

Mick McCarthy's side are scheduled to face Slovakia in a Euro 2020 play-off semi-final later this month, with around 3,000 Irish fans expected to travel to the country for the game.

The match is scheduled to take place in Bratislava on March 26.

The winners of the game are due to face either Northern Ireland or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off final for a place at this summer's tournament.

Doubts remain about the competition going ahead.

Dublin is due to host four matches in the tournament, two of which will include Ireland if the Boys in Green qualify.
