Sligo Rovers handed 3-0 win by FAI after Waterford's failure to fulfil Premier Division fixture

Sligo Rovers have been awarded a 3-0 victory over Waterford FC after their tie in the League of Ireland Premier Division was postpoend.

A new FAI rule brought in over the winter says that games cannot be postponed for Covid-related reasons if there are 14 players available.

Waterford handed Sligo Rovers a 3-0 walkover in line with League rules last weekend - after fielding an under-19 side at home to Drogheda the previous week and losing 7-0.

Longford boss Daire Doyle hit out afterwards, claiming that the integrity of the League had been called into question - his side had lost 1-0 to Waterford at the end of last month.

A statement from the FAI this afternoon confirmed the ruling, saying:

"Sligo Rovers have been awarded a 3-0 win over Waterford FC after the away side failed to fulfil their SSE Airtricity Premier Division fixture on May 15 following a COVID issue within the club The Premier Division league table will be updated accordingly."

Liam Buckley's side will move up one place in the table as a result of the victory, putting them five points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers.

They host Longford Town tomorrow evening.

It's the second time this season where Covid scuppered a fixture.

Galway United were awarded a 3-0 victory over Cabinteely after their First Division clash at Stradbrook was postponed just hours beforehand following a positive test in the Cabinteely squad.

Cabinteely wanted to play but the club’s board agreed to postpone after discussions with the HSE and FAI.

The Dublin club were not happy with the decision, launching an appeal which ultimately failed.

Last year, Derry City were charged by the FAI for failing to fulfil a league fixture with Shamrock Rovers after a Covid case in the Candystripes squad.

But no sanction was imposed as Derry pointed out they were acting on public health advice in Northern Ireland.
