Sligo Rovers 2-3 Shamrock Rovers: Hoops maintain perfect start to season in Showgrounds thriller

Shamrock Rovers’ perfect start to the Airtricity Premier League season continued in Sligo last night.

The Hoops, having beaten champions Dundalk by the same scoreline last week, moved three points clear again at the top of the table thanks to goals from Jack Byrne, Aaron McEneff and Aaron
Greene.

But pointless Sligo made them fight all the way at The Showgrounds and entered the break level thanks to Ronan Coughlan’s 41st minute penalty.

That strike cancelled out Republic of Ireland international Byrne’s neat finish on 23 minutes.

Coughlan converted from the spot after Roberto Lopes fouled David Cawley to leave it 1-1 at the interval.

But the Dubliners showed their muscle and determination in the second period as they powered 3-1 ahead with McEneff and Greene’s strikes in the 76th and 81st minutes respectively.

Home defender Niall Morahan gave the score some respectability three minutes into stoppage time when he slotted into the corner of Alan Mannus’ goal but time ran out for Liam Buckley’s men.

Meanwhile, the 2020 EA Sports Cup gets under way tomorrow with the first tie between hosts Cabinteely and Crumlin United (3.30pm).
