Sligo GAA release statement as seven players test positive for Covid-19 ahead of Galway clash

Sligo GAA are liaising with Croke Park chiefs after seven players tested positive for Covid-19 just days before their Championship clash with Galway.

It emerged last night that several players had contracted the deadly bug, with others awaiting test results and potential close contacts yet to be determined.

And with their Connacht semi-final clash with the Tribesmen set for Pearse Stadium this weekend, the news cast doubt over whether the fixture could be played.

In a statement this morning, Sligo GAA confirmed that seven panel members had tested positive, with more players set to receive test results.

A statement said: "Sligo GAA wish to confirm that a number of members of the Sligo football panel have unfortunately returned a positive Covid-19 test.

"The players in question are currently in isolation and following HSE guideline as are a number of close contacts.

"The players are doing well. A number of the squad are currently awaiting further test results.

"Sligo GAA are currently liaising with GAA officials at Croke Park and Connacht GAA."

The GAA has previously said that postponing a Championship game would only be considered where there is a two-week window between the game in question and the next round of the competition.

Both Connacht semi-finals take place this weekend with the final fixed for November 15, though there may be some wriggle room with the other three provincial deciders scheduled for the weekend of November 21/22.
