Slideshow: Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books

Today is the final day of the Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books exhibition in the city.
Having already travelled to Spain, China, Argentina and Finland, the 90 small books in the collection have been on display at the University of Edinburgh's Main library since last Thursday, showcasing some diverse and inventive manuscripts. Included are some tiny drawing, comical stories and poetry.

The exhibition has been organised by academics from Myers School of Art and the University Of Akron, Ohio. Local artists feature heavily in the pieces on show as well as a number of others from around the globe.

Suggestions on some other sites that none of the books are no bigger than the size of playing card are a bit far-fetched, but the detail in them is pretty exceptional. Amongst the smallest is American artist Susan Vincent's A Promise, a tiny book of pledges printed on letterpress little bigger than a 50 pence coin.

Nestled into a pair of small cases on the 6th floor of the library, the collection does not need a lot of space given its nature, but the innovative ways in which these books have been created makes them worthy of attention.
Professor Del Rey Loven, head of the Art school at Akron said:

"Opening the pages of a miniature artist's book, we venture into a foreign world. Small objects like this are captivating, they transport us beyond the confines of our everyday experience and we are utterly consumed."
