Slides, a 'festival zone' and a 'sky lounge'... these won't be your average, grotty student digs

Student digs... overflowing dishes, grotty bathrooms, noisy housemates.

University accommodation is generally pretty grim.

But, for one lucky bunch of Salford students, uni life could be a lot more fancy.

That's if plans by Bricks Developments get the go-ahead.

Bosses at the firm want to build more than 450 'exclusive' flats on Salford Quays - complete with communal slides; a 'breakout festival zone'; and a 'sky lounge'.

Developers say the building will provide a ‘campus style’ space with a ‘playful’ design and a mix of rooms - including premium apartments and suites.

The new building, which should scale 15 storeys, would be a short walk from the University of Salford’s MediaCityUK and main campuses on King William Street.

The site, currently a derelict and unused surface car park, borders Salford Quays and Ordsall.

Developers argue in papers sent to the town hall that their building would be a ‘gateway’ one, that would bridge the gap between the ‘high quality, contemporary and distinctive’ developments in the Quays and the architecture in Ordsall.

If it goes ahead, it will mark the second stage in a wider student accommodation development by the company.

They’re also building 400 more student apartments in two interlinked blocks a stone’s throw away. This - phase one of the development - also has a coffee shop, ‘picture house’ and gym, all of which would be available to residents in both buildings.

The first phase plans were signed off by the town hall’s planning committee last year, but not all councillors were entirely won over by the plans.

Some said they expected more in section 106 money - cash from developers that funds local projects - than the £50,000 Bricks Developments offered up.

It’s unclear yet how much 106 money the developer is prepared to pay this time.

Developers also have plans for a third phase, which they say they hope will act as a catalyst for wider regeneration in the area.

The plans were sent to the town hall’s planning committee last week and so are likely to come before the panel in the next few months.
