Sleeping teen left with painful facial burns after iPhone charger catches fire

A teenager was left with painful facial burns after her iPhone charger burst into flames as she went to sleep.

Amie Hall, 17, had plugged her device in and put it near her bed when she started drifting off last Thursday.

But the charger caught fire and the blaze tore through her duvet - leaving her with a sore burn on her cheek.

Amie, from Birmingham, raced downstairs and told her mum, who was able to deal with the problem without dialling 999.

Apple said it is taking the incident "very seriously" and an investigation has been opened.

The charger was made up of an official company wire and another brand's plug.

Describing the ordeal, Amie told BirminghamLive: "When this incident happened I felt extremely petrified, very scared and mainly shocked.

"I lay down for around five minutes to close my eyes to fall asleep.... (then) I could see flashing orange colours.

"I woke up and ran downstairs and shouted my mom.

"There was no need for the fire service to attend as my mom had managed to put the fire out herself.

"I would just like to spread the word to please make sure people take note - it could have been a lot worse.

Amie took to Facebook to share an image of her facial injury and warn others not to leave their phone on charge overnight.

She wrote: "So 2am this morning I was lying down as you do on my phone. Plugged in my charger and it set alight.

"My bed cover/duvet set on fire and also caught my face. This isn’t even a cheap charger, it’s an Apple charger.

"Please don’t go to bed and leave your phone charging overnight.

"If I was asleep this could have been a lot worse and this could have set my whole family home up with all my family in ...

"Please be aware that this can happen to anyone and could be a lot worse. It's dangerous."

Apple said it takes customer safety "very seriously" and urged people to view its information on safe charging.

A spokeswoman for Apple said: "Apple takes customer safety very seriously, is in touch with the customer and looking into the matter.

"Information on safe charging of Apple devices can be found here."

Among the advice, Apple warns charging in a poorly ventilated space or where moisture is present could prove a fire hazard.
