'Sleep in a tent if you want a better experience' The TripAdvisor reviews for UK's 'worst' hotel chain's Scottish locations

With a hotel chain that has sites in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Aviemore recently being named as the worst in the UK for the ninth consecutive year, we thought we'd take a look at some of their reviews.

Rated poorly for categories such as cleanliness, bathrooms and value for money, Britannia Hotels did not do well in the annual survey by consumer experts Which?.

The influential site asked thousands of its members to tell them about their experiences of large and small hotel chains, with the verdict on the Britannia being: "Stay elsewhere. Anywhere else."

But what did people who stayed in their Scottish hotels think?

Edinburgh reviews

The Edinburgh hotel had 2,354 reviews, over half of which were poor (435) or terrible (885).

"Had to buy wipes and spray to clean the room myself"

One star reviewer Doreen H angrily posted: "We had the misfortune to book a 2 day break to Edinburgh, to visit the Xmas market.

"We stayed at The Britannia Hotel in a room that had clearly not seen a duster or cleaning cloth for a very long time. Bearing in mind there is a pandemic sweeping the world you'd think cleanliness would be top priority."

"Room obviously hadn’t been cleaned since last party"

Debbie R posted: "member of our party arrived to a room that had an iron and ironing board set up in middle of room and an unmade bed and dirty tray with someone’s leftover tea."

"Sleep in a tent if you want a better experience!"

Another angry reviewer wrote: "Food is astonishingly poor for a hotel, no selection of food at the buffet. I dread what the breakfast will bring... I definitely do not recommend this hotel unless your either skint or very desperate."

Aberdeen

Their Aberdeen hotel has over 918 reviews, just under 600 of which are poor (153) or terrible (442).

"Bed sheets were all ripped the bathroom floor tile were all broken"

Disappointed one-star reviewer Graeme M posted: "I had a room with a window, I could not see out of it for dirt."

"Probably the worst hotel I have stayed in in the UK"

Another angered reviewer added: "The carpets are stained, the decor is tired overall a depressing, dark and dingy atmosphere."

"The hotel from hell"

Susan T wasn't holding back in her one-star review: "Dirty lift , dirty carpet outside lift, the smell in room was horrendous.

"Dirty windows, the view from our room was disgraceful, food was horrendous, bathroom was a disgrace."

Aviemore (Coylumbridge Hotel)

Their Aviemore site has over 4,595 reviews, and fairs a lot better when it comes to reviews having only 1,387 reviews poor (656) or terrible (731).

"Absolutely shocking overnight stay"

One star reviewer Alexis W posted: "Went to our room to find there was no heating in the hotel at all. Reception advised us it had been broken for TWO weeks!!

"Our booking should have been cancelled by them as they knew they had no heating, this was such an unpleasant stay, one that I am not willing to pay for. But manager refused a refund."

"Worst hotel I have ever stayed in…..FACT!"

Shocked reviewer Simon H wrote: "Dog mess in the corridor! When I reported this to reception the guy could not have been less bothered. 20 minutes later when it was still there I asked why it had not been cleaned up I was told he had been too busy??? Absolute shambles."

Britannia Hotel has been contacted for comment.
