Sleep experts share toe tensing tip that can help people drift off at night

Be it hay fever, humidity or warmer weather, there are a good number of reasons people may be struggling to doze off at the moment.

And while getting woken up in the middle of the night, or finding it difficult to get to sleep in the first place, is sometimes unavoidable, it's vital to get proper rest for both mental and physical health.

With that in mind, the sleep experts at MattressNextDay have shared a number of ways to help you doze off at night - including an unusual toe tensing tip.

If you've had a few nights of bad sleep, chances are that you'll be feeling more tense than usual. If this is the case, try alternately tensing and relaxing your toes for a count of 10 each time.

Dr Kathryn A. Boling, a Mercy Medical Center family medicine specialist based in Lutherville, Maryland told Sleep.com that this draws attention away from the rest of your body, and helps you relax more quickly.

Experts also recommend using a hairdryer to remove pet hair and dust from under your bed, as well as pollen.

The MattressNextDay expert commented: "I recommend that you dust every room in your house at least once a month. When it comes to your bedroom, you should aim to dust it every week.

"Make sure all windows are also open, so it creates a well-ventilated environment for the dust to escape."

The experts also recommend a warm, steamy drink before bedtime, as it can not only soothe your sore throat but the steam will help loosen up your congestion.

Peppermint tea has antibacterial and antiviral properties and has been proven to help clear sinuses. Or, alternatively, you can try some chamomile tea as it is known to help those who suffer from insomnia.

Both of these brews tend to be caffeine free, and so won't be giving you an unwanted energy boost just as you're trying to drift away.

Just make sure to drink your tea 60 to 90 minutes before you go to bed, so you don’t wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
