Sleep expert says we should all be wearing socks to bed for 'best night's sleep'

When it comes to sleep, everyone has their preferences. Whether you wear long pyjamas or shorts, or like soothing sounds or silence, there are lots of factors to consider.

Some also prove to be quite divisive. For instance, you can count on starting a rowdy debate if you raise the question of socks in the bedroom.

But in bad news for anyone who thinks you shouldn't wear socks at night, a sleep expert has revealed they could be key to a good night's sleep.

Martin Seeley, Sleep Expert and CEO of MattressNextDay, explained: "Wearing socks to bed can help warm up your feet, which can signal to your body that it's time to sleep. This can help you fall asleep faster and experience deeper sleep.

"Wearing socks to bed can potentially help you get a deeper sleep by keeping your feet warm. When your feet are cold, your blood vessels constrict, which can make it more difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep.

"Wearing socks can help to keep your feet warm, which can help to promote relaxation and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep."

It does still depend on your personal preferences, though. The expert added: "Whether or not wearing socks to bed actually leads to a deeper sleep can depend on the individual. Some people may find that wearing socks to bed is uncomfortable, while others may not notice any difference in the quality of their sleep."

If you prefer to keep your toes sock-free, the good news is there are several other tricks you can try.

Sharing advice for anyone looking to improve the quality of their sleep, the pro said it is also worth sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine in the evening, and making the most of lavender essential oil.

"Lavender has calming and soothing properties and can help promote relaxation and deep sleep," he explained. "You can use lavender essential oil by diffusing it in your bedroom or adding a few drops to your bathwater."
