Sleep expert creates list of books to help adults sleep

A bedtime story can help children drop off to sleep — but what about grown-ups?

Sleep expert Dr David Lewis has co-created a “ZZZ-list” of titles which he says have the ideal characteristics to help readers drift off, such as a simple narrative so the brain is not overstimulated.

The psychologist said bedtime books should also have conclusive chapters to avoid the nagging feeling that something has been left unfinished.

Finally, stories with longer sentences help the brain get into a relaxed state.

Dr Lewis helped The Sheraton Grand Hotel in London pick 30 titles, with bookshop Hatchards, that will be available to guests — including Sally Rooney’s Conversations With Friends and Century Girls by Tessa Dunlop.
