Sledgers criticised for 'careless and thoughtless' behaviour after leaving mess in Sunderland park

Sledgers have been criticised for their "careless and thoughtless behaviour" after leaving shards of plastic scattered across a Sunderland park.

Angry residents took to social media over the weekend to share their frustrations at the mess left by those enjoying the snowy conditions at the hills near Silksworth Ski Slope.

Images posted online showed broken plastic littered across the park with residents left to clean up the debris themselves.

Craig Best shared images of a small amount of the mess left in the park and criticised the lazy culprits for not taking their rubbish home.

He said: "At times I'm embarrassed to live in this city."

Sunderland City Council said staff were called to remove the debris and will continue to monitor the area in future snowy weather.

Councillor Graeme Miller, the leader of Sunderland City Council, condemned the actions of those who littered in the park.

He said: "Many people across the city took the opportunity to get out and enjoy the snow last week, and many did so responsibly, but it is disappointing to see that some people have ruined it for others by failing to clear up after themselves.

"This is careless and thoughtless behaviour that spoils communities and damages the environment.

"We would actively encourage anyone witnessing this type of behavior to report it immediately at www.sunderland.gov.uk/report-it or by calling 0191 5205550."
