Slavia boss shares Rangers second leg fears as 'amazing' Allan McGregor save leaves him floored

Jindrich Trpisovsky took his hat off to Allan McGregor for his stunning last-gasp save, as the Slavia Prague boss fears the Ibrox pitch could prove a key factor in the second leg.

The Rangers goalkeeper denied Lukas Masopust with a brilliant stop, plunging low to his left to keep out his header on a corner and holding the ball too.

That preserved a 1-1 draw in the Europa League last 16 first leg, with the replay to come at Ibrox next week.

The Slavia manager admits he's rarely seen as good a stop as he analysed his team's performance.

Trpisovsky said: "We started the match according to our plan, scored a nice goal and overall controlled the game.

"That first half cost us a lot of energy and when we went back to the dressing room with an unfavourable score, despite the good performance, that helped our opponents."

It was then put to the Slavia boss that Rangers offered almost nothing in the first half.

Trpisovsky responded: "But they always play that way, especially in Europe. It's their style of play, they wait for a mistake and then attack the open defence.

"In the first half they got the maximum from the minimum, the equaliser encouraged them and we couldn't press home our advantage in the second half.

"There was also fatigue, over time it was clear that the players were no longer so accurate with the ball.

"I wasn't happy with our build-up either, it was all down the wings and we let our opponents counter-attack too often. We should have done better in the final third.

"But if I flip it around, from a Rangers point of view we had four really good chances and if we take three of those then we're talking about an opponent that's in trouble.

"For example, McGregor had an amazing intervention at the end. Hats off, it's been a long time since I've seen a save like that.

"Maybe we'll be luckier next week."

And the Slavia boss admitted his fear that playing at Ibrox will suit Rangers' style far more than his own side.

He explained: "It will all depend on the condition of the pitch. We have reports - and this was confirmed in their previous match against Antwerp - that the pitch will suit their style of play.

"They try to occupy and close off the centre of the pitch to make their counter-attacks easier.

"In addition, at the start of the match they'll have a result in their hands that is good enough to qualify so it will be crucial for us to score a goal.

"If we do that then everything can turn around, it will be down to our quality on the night."

Rangers aren't playing at the weekend while Slavia visit Mlada Boleslav on Sunday.

Trpisovsky was asked what kind of effect that would have and admitted it could weigh on his players.

He said: "Unfortunately a big one. Both teams expended a lot of energy in this match and you could see that by the end.

"If we could choose we wouldn't play on Sunday either."
