Slateford Road crash: 65-year-old man in serious condition after his car smashes into traffic lights

A 65-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after the crash on this morning.

The accident, which happened at 5am, caused the busy route to be shut for four hours. Police say only one vehicle was involved, a white Vauxhall Insignia.

The driver was heading east when , with the vehicle hitting traffic lights in the opposite side of the road.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and he was taken away to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment to serious injuries.

Police are now trying to establish exactly what happened, with sergeant Jennifer Forbes of Edinburgh road policing urging any witnesses to come forward.

She said: "The driver remains in hospital in a serious condition. Anyone who has any information in regards to the incident or anyone who may have dashcam footage is urged to get in contact.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area or seen the incident to come forward with any information that may help our investigation."
