Slate 'nearly hit someone' after being blown from third floor roof onto Edinburgh street

A large slate which fell from a third-floor roof narrowly avoided hitting someone who had just stepped out of a pub.

The slate fell from a building on Elm Row on Friday evening, as high winds began to hit the capital.

The following day masonry fell from a building near Edinburgh Bus Station, causing the transport hub to shut temporarily.

A photo of the fallen slate on Elm Row was tweeted at Edinburgh council's customer service account.

A pub manager who posted it said: "On Friday evening a roof slate fell from a 3rd floor roof and narrowly missed a customer on the street."

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh council confirmed their staff had been out to inspect the roof following the incident.

The owner of the property was notified and advised to carry out further checks, however it was not deemed unsafe and an enforcement notice was not issued.

Edinburgh saw more strong gales on Monday, as a weather system called Storm Brendan hit Scotland from the Atlantic.
