The horror he inflicted on that poor child and the torment he has caused her family is bad enough.
But his sheer lack of remorse and his sick fantasies, revealed in a chilling 21-page court judgment, are evidence of a deranged and warped mind.
How can someone like Campbell, who was said to be “quite satisfied” with Alesha’s murder, ever be freed?
In sentencing Alesha’s murderer, Lord Matthews said Campbell has experienced “irreparable corruption” and concluded there was an “impossibility of rehabilitation”.
Yesterday, Lady Dorrian ruled that while “the reintegration and rehabilitation of Aaron Campbell will be very challenging, it is not necessarily impossible”.
Legal judgments are seldom black and white, but in this terrible case Lady Dorrian has sent entirely the wrong message to a remorseless killer by reducing his sentence.
She has also heaped yet more anguish on a family who have suffered unimaginable pain.
