Slapstick Festival review: A fun-filled night of comedy in one of Bristol's holiest settings hosted by Shappi Khorsandi

It's hard to imagine a grander setting for a Bristol event than the city's cathedral.

And as Shappi Khorsandi took to the pulpit to present a Slapstick Festival night on Thursday (January 23), the irony was not lost on her.

The captivated audience laughed along as the comedian pointed out she was vice-president of Humanists UK.

And Shappi's irreverence in this place of worship perfectly mirrored the subject matter of the event - slapstick divas.

The audience was treated to a night of films showcasing some of our best female silent comedy stars, including Mabel Normand, Louise Fazenda, Dorothy Devore and Gale Henry.

The films were full of classic farce, mix-ups and moments of outrageous humour.

My particular favourite was a short in which a husband returned home after eight months with a note from his wife promising a big surprise.

This was actually that she had moved to the flat across the corridor, but when her husband went into his old home to find a nurse with two babies - chaos ensues.

And what really topped off the atmosphere was the live music. The films were played on a screen while pianists played on within the cathedral.

All in all it was a fabulous night with a host who earned her place presenting an event filled with fellow divas, proving just how valuable the Slapstick Festival is.
