Slain rapper XXXTentacion breaks Taylor Swift's Spotify streaming record

A track by rapper XXXTentacion smashed the Spotify record for streams in a single day after he was shot and killed at age 20, dethroning reigning pop queen Taylor Swift.

"SAD!," originally released by XXXTentacion in March, racked up 10.4 million streams Tuesday, according to Billboard. The feat pushed the late rapper past Taylor Swift, whose song "Look What You Made Me Do" scored 10.1 million streams upon its Aug. 25, 2017 release.

The record-breaking number of plays came one day after the controversial rapper was gunned down by two unidentified attackers outside a South Florida motorcycle dealership on Monday.

XXXTentacion had previously had a tense relationship with Spotify, as the music streaming platform removed the rapper and others, including R. Kelly, from inclusion in top playlists for violating its "hateful conduct" policy in May.

After some backlash, the company reversed course, and after the rapper's death, "SAD!" was bumped to the top of the influential Rap Caviar playlist.

The rapper, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, had been booted in the first place over a string of domestic violence and witness tampering charges, for which he was awaiting trial at the time of his death.
