FUKUOKA -- A memorial service for Tetsu Nakamura, the Japanese doctor killed last year while carrying out humanitarian work in Afghanistan, was held at Kyushu University in Fukuoka ahead of the first anniversary of his death.

Nakamura was the representative in Afghanistan for the nongovernmental organization Peshawar-kai and was working for the reconstruction of the country. He was 73 when he was fatally shot by an armed group on Dec. 4 in eastern Afghanistan.

About 450 people, including the bereaved family of Nakamura and Bashir Mohabbat, Afghanistan's ambassador to Japan, attended the ceremony held Monday at Nakamura's alma mater.

"I hope the activities of Peshawar-kai, which carries on my father's cause, will help foster peace in Afghanistan," said Nakamura's son Ken, 37.
