Tickets to see Skywhale and Skywhalepapa sold out on Friday morning in less than 15 minutes.

Tickets for Skywhales: Every heart sings on February 6 went on sale at 10am and by 10.15am, the National Gallery of Australia website stated the first release had sold out. The second release tickets will be available from 10am on Wednesday.

The event will be the maiden voyage for Skywhalepapa, the companion to the skyborne beast Skywhale, which was commissioned by the National Gallery of Australia in 2019.

Patricia Piccinini's new creation is larger than the original, measuring 25 metres tall, 23 metres wide and 32 metres long. Weighing in at 450 kilograms, Skywhalepapa is about a third larger than Skywhale.

The first launch date will be on February 6 at 5.30am, followed by two more on March 8 and April 3. Tickets to the other flights will be released at a later date.

There will also be a live performance of We are the Skywhales by Canberran Jess Green with her band and the Luminescence Children's Choir to create an immersive sonic experience.
