Skyscanner co-founder invests £1.5 million in home security start-up

Skyscanner co-founder Gareth Williams has made his biggest angel investment to date, putting £1.5m into a smart home security start-up.

Edinburgh-based Boundary Technologies announced its total funding is now £3.7m.

It launched a DIY home security system in March and will use the new money to accelerate growth during the next 18 months.

It plans to increase its team from nine to 18 employees, while developing further products and technologies.

Part of the expansion involves developing Boundary’s local crime information sharing network, leveraging data streams from any connected Boundary alarm system.

Three of the employees will be responsible for the delivery of the network, while roles in design, development and community management are also being filled.

Boundary’s primary focus this year centres around the growth of the alarm system, while the development of an artificial intelligence camera system will also continue.

The £1.5m investment from Skyscanner’s Gareth Williams represents his biggest angel investment to date, while the remainder of the funds coming from existing Boundary shareholders Scottish Enterprise and Equity Gap.

Founders Robin Knox and Paul Walton and chairman Richard Lewis are also investing their own money.

Chief executive Knox said: “This is hugely exciting news and is a change of trajectory from our original, more modest ambitions - we are now set on the path for Boundary to become a top-tier European home security business.

“To have someone with the calibre of Gareth giving our product his backing and mentorship is incredible; we have massive plans for the future.”
