Skylight feature to let in natural light at Chennai airport soon

CHENNAI: The skylight feature on the roof of the new terminal, which is nearing completion, is being set up by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to use natural light.

The natural light-harvesting technology has louvres fitted inside the 6m diameter drums, which would tilt as per the sun's angle. It is also equipped to cut down UV radiation, said an AAI official.

Around 24 such skylights would be installed on the roof of the integrated terminal. “The louvres with sensors will reflect the diffused light into the terminal. The idea is to maximise daylight harvesting to reduce depending on power for lights during the day and improve its carbon footprint.” The feature, set up as the airport extension work, is a patented technology and is used worldwide, he added.

This is being set up as the building is vast and does not use as much glass facade as the existing terminals.

AAI has adopted the facility as part of its green initiative, which includes the use of solar power. AAI is planning to open the terminal this year.
