David Hare’s contemporary classic Skylight returns to Melbourne Theatre Company, 20 years after it premiered in Australia. The Olivier and Tony award-winning play is set in 1995, when Margaret Thatcher’s prime ministership came to an end. It exposes the gulf between the rich and poor, telling a story of love lost and gained, against the backdrop of a divided England.
Anna Samson (Birdland, The Sublime) plays Kyra, a teacher in a disadvantaged school who broke off her six–year relationship with a wealthy married man to pursue what seemed more meaningful. Years later her former lover Tom, played by Colin Friels (Endgame, Red), tracks her down hoping to rekindle their flame. It’s not long before they realise their ideas and desires are as incompatible as ever.
