The initial statement from the local police said there had been a "parachute malfunction and hard landing".

The victim's identity has not been released by the police until the next of kin have been notified.

Police were called to DeLand Municipal Airport, Florida, at around 11.45am on Monday October 3.

Despite the shocking nature of deaths connected to the sport, statistically they are very rare.

In 2021, the United States Parachute Association recorded 10 fatal skydiving accidents, the lowest year on record.

Jumping in tandem with another person, usually the way beginners will develop their skills, is considered far safer.

A spokesperson for DeLand Police said: "One person has died following an apparent skydiving accident.

"DeLand Police responded to the DeLand Municipal Airport around 11.45am Monday after several 911 calls were received regarding a skydiving incident.

"Upon arrival, a male skydiver, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was declared deceased on scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

"The body of the deceased has been turned over to the Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death."

In June, a British base jumper tragically died after his parachute reportedly failed to open during a jump in the Alps.

Base jumping is similar to sky diving but you jump off high places like cliffs or tall buildings as opposed to out of planes.

Dylan Roberts died in the horror accident in Italy, only a day after another adrenaline junkie died in a similar incident.

The 33-year-old experienced base jumper was with a group of five friends when he launched himself off of Mount Brento, from an 800m high ledge.

The spot is known locally as “Happy Birthday” and is one of the most popular destinations in the world for base jumping and sky divers.

Dylan, nicknamed 'English' within the base jumping community, jumped from it around 7am local time but friends said his parachute failed to open.
