Solo skydiver survives horror crash after he hit the ground at 60kph and got dragged 20 metres

CareFlight transported the man to Darwin after local health workers provided first aid.

A skydiver has sustained injuries to his hip and buttocks when making a nasty crash landing south of Darwin over the weekend.

It is believed the 27-year-old man was skydiving solo near the town of Batchelor around lunchtime on Saturday when the landing went wrong.

Members of a nearby skydiving group told CareFlight the man hit the ground at a reported speed of about 60kph.

CareFlight general manager Philip Roberts said he believed windy conditions might have been a factor.

After the landing, the man was dragged about 20 metres after winds picked up his parachute.

"When we got to him he was conscious and breathing but he'd suffered injuries to his hip," Mr Roberts said.

"He basically got dragged along on his side."

Staff from the local health clinic provided first aid and spinal precautions before the CareFlight crew arrived by helicopter.

"They assessed him and provided him some treatment for his injuries to his hips and buttocks, and then we got him as quickly as possible to Royal Darwin Hospital," Mr Roberts said.

"I think it's fair to say that our crew deal with a variety of injuries, so this is one more to add to the long list."

The man remains in hospital in a stable condition.
