May 06--Jacki Gemelos' feel-good story from last season won't see a second act, at least with the Sky, and at least for now.
On Friday, the Sky waived the backup guard who overcame five ACL surgeries in more than five years to latch on with the team. They also cut 5-foot-6 Texas A rookie Jordan Jones less than a month after drafting her.
Last year, Gemelos talked about pushing herself to physical and emotional limits to make it to the WNBA. "My journey's been a long road up to this point, but everything that I've been through definitely made me who I am today," Gemelos told the Tribune. Many of her teammates rallied around her comeback story, and Elena Delle Donne spoke highly of her locker room presence.
The Sky are deep at guard, boasting two-time champion Cappie Pondexter, assists leader Courtney Vandersloot and Sixth Woman of the Year Allie Quigley as well as promising young pieces in Betnijah Laney and Jamierra Faulkner. Delle Donne also swings between guard and forward.
Nebraska rookie guard Yvonne Turner reports to training camp on Saturday. The Sky have 14 players on the roster and must cut to 12 by May 12, two days before the opener at Allstate Arena against the Connecticut Sun.
Gemelos averaged 17 minutes, 5 points and 1.7 assists in three preseason games. Jones played about 13 minutes per game, averaging 3 points and 2.3 assists.
The Sky selected Jones with the 34th overall pick in the third round of last month's draft.
